Course Description

The course will focus on the assessment and treatment of patients with vertigo and dysequilibrium from complex and unusual vestibular causes.

The course is designed for clinicians (PT & MD) with prior vestibular rehabilitation course work and clinical experience.

Material covered will include advanced techniques for treating -

Anterior and horizontal canal BPPV, central causes of dizziness (including concussion), identification and treatment of cervicogenic dizziness, persistent postural perceptual dizziness, migraine and other unusual vestibular disorders.

As vestibular disorders occur across the lifespan and with various disorders, this information is applicable to a large patient population with symptoms of dizziness.

Objectives

1) Course participants will be able to demonstrate the ability to diagnose and perform the various appropriate treatment techniques for anterior semicircular canal BPPV, horizontal semicircular canal BPPV, including BPPV affecting the anterior arm of the horizontal semicircular canal.

2) Course participants will be able to identify central vs. peripheral causes of positioning vertigo, as well as atypical patterns of BPPV.

3) Course participants will develop an understanding of the causes of cervicogenic dizziness and will be able to conduct and interpret a detailed examination of the patient to differentiate between vestibular and cervicogenic causes of dizziness.

4) Course participants will be able to design and conduct a treatment program for individuals with cervicogenic dizziness, including manual traction techniques for the cervical spine and cervical kinesthetic retraining techniques.

5) Course participants will develop an understanding of central causes of dizziness, including CVA, brain injury, and concussion. Course participants will be able to design and modify treatment programs based on the nature of the cause of dizziness in this patient population.

6) Course participants will develop an understanding of other causes of dizziness such as Persistent Perceptual Postural Dizziness, Vestibular Migraine, and Superior Canal Dehiscence. Course participants will be able to design and modify treatment programs based on the nature of the cause of dizziness in this patient population.

Faculty:
Richard Clendaniel, PT, PhD - Duke University, USA.

Richard Clendaniel, PT, Ph.D, renowned clinical expert and instructor in vestibular rehabilitation is an assistant professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Division, Duke University Medical Center.

He received his MS in Physical Therapy from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He was a clinician and faculty member at UAB for several years before receiving his Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience (Department of Psychology) from UAB.

He completed a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in neuro-otology with Susan Herdman, Ph.D., PT. He was previously on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Department of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, where he was director of the Vestibular Rehabilitation Program and was recently appointed to the Medical Advisory Board for the Vestibular Disorders Association (VEDA).

He maintains an active practice evaluating and treating patients with vestibular disorders and dizziness. His primary research interests are in the normal function of the vestibular system and the plasticity of the vestibular following injury
